LBR Staff Writer Published 02 February 2012

DB Schenker Rail Automotive and Schenker Transitários, have launched a new regular rail freight service between Portugal and Germany for the automotive industry.

The new service which will start on 3 February will connect Porto and Lisbon in Portugal with factories in northern Germany.

According to the company said the new weekly weekend service on the Braunschweig/Göttingen-Lisbon/Porto route will take less than three days to complete the distance of 2,700km.

The service will ensure that the transportation times are short and automotive products reach their destination quickly during weekend driving bans on the roads.

The company said that the change of gauge will take place in Irun - from European standard gauge to the Iberian standard, and vice versa.

From August, the service will include an additional train pair each week.
