Transport and logistics solutions provider XPO Logistics has secured an expanded contract from UK government-owned company Highways England.

Highways England is engaged in the operation, maintenance and improvement of the country’s motorways and main carriageways.

As part of a multi-million pound contract, XPO Logistics will continue to run a national technology and logistics centre (NTLC) in West Hallam, Derbyshire.

Since 2010, XPO has been operating NTLC on behalf of Highways England.

The deal will also include the management of Highways England’s Charm technology centre, which involves in testing roadside equipment in a safe environment.

XPO will store all the components used in the implementation of maintenance and repair works at the West Hallam facility.

Later, the components will be distributed to eight regional depots of Highways England on a weekly basis.

The components comprised of cables and other electronics used to keep CCTV, weather monitoring and electronic signage services working on Smart motorways.

Highways England national logistics manager Stewart Young said: “Since appointing XPO Logistics as our national logistics partner, we have been able to significantly reduce the lead time to deliver equipment and materials to roadworks sites.”

XPO Logistics Europe supply chain director Richard Cawston said: “The expansion of our long-term relationship with Highways England is a testament to our understanding of this customer’s unique requirements, and our ability to offer flexible solutions from a strategically located, central site.”

In July, XPO Logistics also secured a distribution contract from research laboratory products supplier VWR International.

Under the deal, XPO Logistics distributes the products of VWR to more than 9000 pharmaceutical, biotechnology, industrial, education, government and healthcare facilities across the UK.
